Community Input Sought on Mattamuskeet Lodge Project SWAN QUARTER, N.C. (March 4, 2008)– The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking community thoughts and ideas on future uses of the historic Mattamuskeet Lodge in Hyde County. “The lodge holds historical distinction not only for the people of Hyde County but for the Commission and the sporting community as well,” said Wes Seegars, chairman of the commission. "Lake Mattamuskeet continues to have international significance to North Carolina. In years past the lodge was the focal point of these activities and, with the help of the local community, it will regain its status as one of eastern North Carolina’s premier destinations for sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts.” The lodge was deeded from federal to state ownership in December 2006 with the Wildlife Resources Commission selected as the agency in charge of stewardship. Originally built in 1915 as a pumping station to drain Lake Mattamuskeet for agricultural use, which continued until 1934, the structure was converted into a hunting lodge by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935. Mattamuskeet Lodge became a popular destination, drawing national attention for decades. Mattamuskeet Lodge was placed on the National Historic Register in 1980. It was closed to the public in 2000 because of safety concerns with its debilitated condition. Estimates for renovations necessary to make the 15,000 square-foot building structurally sound are between $3.5 million and $5.5 million. |
