Winners in Kids Wildlife Art Competition Announced

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 10, 2008) – Backyard bunnies, a bear in the woods and a bluebird atop a  tree were but a few of the entries in the Kids Wildlife Art Competition held by Wildlife in North Carolina magazine and the N.C. Museum of Art.

The 12 winners will be published in a 2009 calendar that will be for sale to the public. Winners will also receive $100, a family membership to the N.C. Museum of Art and free copies of the calendar.

North Carolina children, kindergarten through eighth grade, were eligible to enter one image of a wild animal native to the state. There were 3,365 entries. A gallery of the winning artists’ entries and those receiving honorable mentions will be posted online at www.ncwildlife.org on May 1.

The winners, age, hometown and art subject are:

  • Jennifer Sieredzki, 6, Clayton, Little metalmark butterfly
  • Alexandra Barsony, 7, Winston-Salem, Red wolves at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
  • Colby Whaley, 7, Smithfield, Northern water snake
  • Lila Winter, 9, Raleigh,  Blue jay
  • Madisyn DeCant, 9, Shawboro, Barn owls
  • Lauren Puckett, 9, Charlotte, Raccoon in snow
  • Christopher Williams, 10, Durham, Great horned owl
  • Asherel Kaseorg, 10, Charlotte,  Eastern gray squirrel
  • Devin Whitlark, 11, Greenville, Mother bird and two chicks
  • Logan Beyer, 13, New Bern, Sea turtles
  • Tucker Besosa, 13, Asheville, Black bear family
  • Kerchuan Soong, 15, Charlotte, Red fox
Each entry reflects both an artistic endeavor and another opportunity to learn about the varied wildlife that calls North Carolina home,” said Jim Wilson, associate editor of Wildlife in North Carolina magazine. “The competition is designed to encourage students to observe and appreciate native wildlife and, clearly, these young people did just that.”

Wildlife in North Carolina magazine is the official educational publication of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and natural resources. The North Carolina Museum of Art, located at 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, is one of the premier visual arts museums in the Southeast, with an extensive and historic collection.

Competition judges were Joseph Covington, director of the Museum Park at the N.C. Museum of Art; Tim Lee, staff illustrator for The News & Observer newspaper of Raleigh and an accomplished freelance artist; Karen Lee, an acclaimed illustrator of children’s books and magazines; along with Wildlife in North Carolina magazine graphic designers Kristie Rhodes and Marsha Tillett, and art director Vickie Cumbee.
