Recreational Boating Course is an Educational Bargain

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 8, 2008)– Classes and instruction for many hobbies and recreational activities can be quite expensive, but one of the most valuable and comprehensive training sessions for recreational boating is administered free in North Carolina.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission offers boating education classes, accredited by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, at no charge statewide. The 6- to 8-hour course covers proper boat operation, legal requirements, how to handle emergencies and more. The course is required for 14-16 year olds to operate a personal watercraft (also known as a “jet ski”) in North Carolina.

“Considering that the knowledge gained through this course could save your life, I’d say it would be a bargain at any price. That’s not to mention it qualifies many vessel owners for lower insurance rates,” said Capt. Chris Huebner, the state’s boating safety coordinator. “Whether it’s sailing, personal watercraft, motorboats or a pontoon boat, taking the course will sharpen your knowledge and skills, and save you money.”
