Halifax County Fishing Event Scheduled for Young Anglers

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 30) – To get young anglers hooked on fishing, Alan’s Wildlife Ventures, along with the Lake Gaston Striper Club, Halifax County 4-H Rural Life Center and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, will host a Fish-For-Fun event on May 8, from 9 a.m.– noon. The free event, open to the first 100 anglers ages 8 to 14, will be held at Alan Vester’s pond in Halifax County.

Alan’s Wildlife Ventures will provide lunch for all registered participants and their parents, and the Commission will have rods, reels and tackle available for anglers who do not have their own fishing gear.

In addition, registered participants will receive Fish-For-Fun bags filled with fishing-related goodies, such as fish identification booklets and fishing tape measures. Alan’s Wildlife Ventures will give trophies to anglers who catch the biggest fish, the most fish and the ugliest fish.

No special skills or previous ability to fish is required. Members of the Lake Gaston Striper Club will be present to assist young anglers and help make their experience more enjoyable.

“We should have one adult for every five kids to show them everything they need to know about fishing, including how to bait the hook, take the fish off and how to cast,” said Jim Howell, president and founder of the striper club.
To enhance fishing opportunities for the young anglers, the Wildlife Commission will release 500 channel catfish into the pond shortly before the event, said Fred Harris, chief of the Commission’s Division of Inland Fisheries.

“We’re very pleased to be working with Alan’s Wildlife Ventures, the Lake Gaston Striper Club and the Halifax County Rural 4-H Life Center to give kids the opportunity to have fun and spend some quality time with their family and friends,” Harris said. “The Commission is stocking the lake with catchable-sized channel catfish to give kids a better chance of reeling in the catch of their lives. The more positive their initial fishing trip is, the more likely they will make fishing a lifelong hobby.”

In addition to channel catfish, participants will have the opportunity to catch a variety of fishes, including crappie, largemouth bass and bluegill.

Howell said that a strong turnout for this inaugural Fish-For-Fun event will help ensure it becomes an annual event for young anglers in Halifax and surrounding counties.

Because a lot of anglers are expected, pre-registration is recommended. To pre-register, contact the Halifax County Cooperative Extension Service, 252-583-5161. Directions to the private pond will be given to participants when they register.
