N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Wins Six National Awards RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 2) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission won six awards, including two first-place awards, at the Association for Conservation Information (ACI) annual conference held last month in New Orleans, La.
The Wildlife Commission won first-place honors in the photography division for an underwater trout photo published in the June 2003 issue of Wildlife in North Carolina magazine. The Commission also won first place for its 2003 wildlife calendar. This marked the third year in a row the calendar garnered national recognition, winning third place in 2002 and first place in 2001. “The wildlife calendar has long been the best-selling item in the Commission’s WILD Store, so we already knew North Carolinians thought highly of it,” said Ginger Williams, chief of the Commission’s Conservation Education Division. “It’s a credit to Vickie Cumbee and Barbara Scott, our art director and former special publications editor, that a nationwide panel of judges in the wildlife field affirmed the widely held belief that this is one of the best wildlife calendars in the country.” The Wildlife Commission's second-place awards were in the four-color periodicals category for its monthly Wildlife in North Carolina magazine, and for the article “Uproar” published December 2003 about the controversy surrounding the Navy's choice of Washington County for its Outlying Landing Field. Turtle photography from the August 2003 issue won third place, as did the Commission’s Web site, www.ncwildlife.org. Founded in 1938, ACI is a non-profit association of information and education professionals representing state, federal and Canadian agencies and private conservation organizations. The association trains and informs the staffs of member agencies and provides forums to exchange ideas and improve skills. Wildlife Commission’s
