Highlands Boy Wins Lifetime Fishing License

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Aug. 4) — Talk about not letting the big one get away! Payton Robinson of Highlands registered for a Fish-For-Fun event at Cliffside Lake earlier this summer and reeled in some fish with the help of his mother, Charissa Robinson. This Saturday, Payton will be reeling in more fish — and a lifetime fishing license too — courtesy of the Jackson County Sportsmen’s Club, Progress Energy and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

Through the luck of a draw, Payton’s name was randomly picked from more than 2,100 other young anglers’ names to win one of three lifetime comprehensive fishing licenses given away as part of North Carolina’s celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week, June 5-13.

Unable to travel to Raleigh to receive his prize last month, Payton will go fishing this Saturday at the Jackson County Sportsmen’s Club Kids’ Fishing Day on Cullowhee Creek at Western Carolina University. Between casts, the 5-year-old will receive his lifetime fishing license from Wildlife Commissioner Bobby Setzer and fisheries biologist Scott Loftis.

The license, donated by Progress Energy and valued at $250, gives Payton lifetime fishing privileges in all North Carolina public waters, including designated Public Mountain Trout Waters.

The Kids’ Fishing Day this Saturday is free and open to the public, 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Wildlife Commission will stock Cullowhee Creek with trout the day before the fishing event. The Jackson County Sportsmen’s Club will loan rods and reels during the fishing event and provide a free midday lunch.

Directions: Go to Western Carolina University’s campus, turn left into the parking lot at the campus entrance, and look for the picnic area near Cullowhee Creek where the fishing event will be held.
