South Mountains State Park Closed

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 4) – Burke County anglers hoping to harvest their limit of seven trout from delayed-harvest waters in South Mountains State Park will need to find an alternate trout stream to drop their lines. Due to a major reconstruction project on the main entrance road, the park — and its streams — are closed to all visitors. The anticipated reopening date is July 1.

While the majority of waters in South Mountains State Park are classified as “wild-trout” waters, approximately two miles are designated as “delayed-harvest” trout waters. Delayed-harvest regulations allow only catch-and-release fishing, and anglers can fish only with artificial lures with one hook.

From June 5 to Sept. 30, anglers fishing in “delayed-harvest” trout waters can keep up to seven trout with no size or bait restrictions when the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission opens these waters under “hatchery-supported” regulations.
