RALEIGH, N.C. (May 5) – Anglers fishing Lake Julian will have more fish to catch and free rods and reels to borrow this year. Thanks to the cooperative efforts of the Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Services, Progress Energy and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, Lake Julian recently joined the Commission’s Community Fishing Program (CFP) and Fishing Tackle Loaner Program (FTLP). As a new CFP site, Lake Julian received the first of six stockings of 8- to 12-inch channel catfish on May 4, with monthly stockings following in June through October. Commission personnel are stocking 6,000 channel catfish this year, and on an annual basis, to enhance fishing opportunities for anglers. A solar-powered fish feeder will be installed later this month to concentrate fish for anglers and help the fish grow bigger, faster. The FTLP, which will begin mid-May, offers loaner rods and reels from the park office free of charge to anglers of all ages on a first-come, first-serve basis. Lake Julian, a 215-acre impoundment owned by Progress Energy and leased to Buncombe County, is located in Lake Julian Park near Skyland.
