Take a Kid Fishing During National Fishing and Boating Week RALEIGH, N.C. (May 14) – Looking for a fun and inexpensive outdoor activity for you and your kids this summer? If so, you’re in luck! As part of National Fishing and Boating Week 2004, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, along with Progress Energy, Bass Pro Shops, the U.S. Forest Service and local sponsors, will host free fishing clinics throughout the state for young anglers, June 5-13.
Children registered at any Commission-supported event during National Fishing and Boating Week (see list below) are eligible to enter a statewide drawing for prizes, including rods, reels, spools of fishing line and tackle boxes, courtesy of Bass Pro Shops and the Wildlife Commission. The grand prizes, donated by Progress Energy, are three lifetime comprehensive fishing licenses, valued at $250 each. The Commission will conduct the drawing at the end of June and will publish a list of winners on its Web site. Grand prize winners will be featured in the Commission’s magazine, Wildlife in North Carolina. Local sponsors for many events also will provide prizes and gifts to registered participants. To enhance fishing opportunities for participants, the Commission will stock fish at many of these sites prior to the events, according to Bob Curry, program manager for the Commission’s Division of Inland Fisheries. “With our sponsors already contributing so much to ensure these kids have a fun and inexpensive fishing experience while spending quality time with family and friends, we are looking forward to making a unique contribution as well,” Curry said. “The Commission provides supplemental stocking of fish in many ponds to give kids a better chance of reeling in the catch of their lives. The more positive their initial fishing trip is, the more likely they will make fishing a lifelong hobby.” National Fishing and Boating Week, coordinated each year in June by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF), gives children and their families an opportunity to learn about protecting and conserving the state’s aquatic resources while enjoying the thrill of fishing and boating. Many of the more than 2,500 children expected to participate in this year’s events will be first-time anglers. Don’t let the big one get away!
