Species recently described whose status has not yet been evaluated include:
Cambarus
hobbsorum and other species that have been discovered but are not
yet officially described.
Short Definitions of Codes Used in Above Table
Committee (Scientific Council on Freshwater and Terrestrial Crustaceans; Clamp 1999) Rank: E = endangered; T = threatened; SC = special concern; U = undetermined status; C = common; O = occasional; I = infrequent; * = species not described at time
State (NC Wildlife Resources Commission) Status: E = endangered; T = threatened; SC = special concern; WL = watch list; (P) = proposed listing by above Committee, effective 1 July 2002. The only officially recognized state statuses are E, T, and SC (WL is provided as a precautionary measure, to allow resource users to proceed with caution).
NCSM (NC State Museum of Natural Sciences) Rank: E = endangered; T = threatened; V1 = vulnerable, category 1 (enough info to list); V2 = vulnerable, category 2 (should probably list, but not enough info to confirm); V3 = vulnerable, category 3 ("watch list"; more widespread than previously thought but may be re-elevated with more info)
USFWS (US Fish & Wildlife Service): E = endangered; T = threatened; Proposed = officially proposed for listing; Status Review = being considered for listing (3 categories): Category 1 = similar to V1 above; Category 2 = similar to V2 above; Category 3 = no longer being considered for listing due to (a) believed to be extinct, (b) not falling into definition of "species", (c) similar to V3 above.
Natural Heritage Program Ranks*:
Global Rank: assigned by NatureServe
(international association of heritage programs):
Bracketed (e.g., [G3G4]) are those
suggested by the NC Scientific Council, and are not The Nature Conservancy's
assigned ranks.
G1 = Critically
imperiled globally because of extreme rarity or because of some factor(s)
making it especially vulnerable to extinction.
G2 = Imperiled
globally because of rarity or because of some factor(s) making it especially
vulnerable to extinction.
G3 = Either
very rare and local throughout its range, or found locally (even abundantly
at some of its locations) in a restricted range
(e.g., a single physiographic region) or becuase of other factors making
it vulnerable to extinction throughout its range.
G4 = Apparently
secure globally, though it may be quite rare in parts of its range, especially
at the periphery.
G5 = Demonstrably
secure globally, though it may be quite rare in parts of its range, especially
at the periphery.
GU = Possibly
in peril range-wide, but status uncertain; more information is needed.
G? = Unranked,
or status uncertain.
State Rank:
S1 = Critically
imperiled in state because of extreme rarity or because of some factor(s)
making it especially vulnerable to extirpation from state.
S2 = Imperiled
in state because of rarity or because of some factor(s) making it very
vulnerable to extirpation from state.
S3 = Rare
or uncommon in state.
S4 = Apparently
secure in state, with many occurrences
S5 = Demonstrably
secure in state and essentially ineradicable under present conditions.
SA = Accidental
or casual; one to several records for state, but the state is outside the
normal range of the species.
SU = Possibly
in peril in state but status uncertain; need more information.
S? = Unranked,
or status uncertain.
State Status: E = Endangered; T = Threatened; SC = Special Concern; P = Proposed (E,T, or SC); SR = Significantly Rare; W = Watch list, with categories below
W1 = Watch
List, category 1: species known to be declining in the state; may
need listing in upcoming years.
W2 = Watch
List, category 2: species rare to uncommon, but probably not in trouble.
W3 = Watch
List, category 3: species that is poorly known; perhaps needs listing
in upcoming years.
W4 = Watch
List, category 4: species reported from the state without adequate
documentation.
W5 = Watch
List, category 5: species with increasing amount of threats to its
habitat, whether populations are known to be declining or not.
Federal Status: E = Endangered; T = Threatened; C = Candidate (with categories similar to others); FSC = proposed for federal special concern
* Information is taken from the latest NHP report (LeGrand et al. 2001), which can be downloaded in PDF format from the NC Natural Heritage Program.
